First of all, what is a successful photo shoot?
I would define it as a shoot that results in beautiful images for my client that she can use for her intended purpose.
From my experience, I find that there are 3 steps to take to successfully reach that goal.
Step 1: Be clear on what we are trying to accomplish during the shoot.
There’s usually a reason that we decide that we would like to have a photo shoot and usually these reasons present themselves when a transition is happening in our lives. Sometimes the transition is easily identified, i.e., your baby can now sit up, your oldest child is leaving home for college, you are looking for a new job and need to update your business profile photo, you have just settled into a new home and want a family portrait for your home decor, you are having a milestone birthday, etc.
Sometimes the reason is more subtle, and we’re not really sure why we feel drawn to having a photo shoot, but we just do!
Taking the time to identify the reason for the shoot is an important first step.
Step 2: Collaborate with your photographer and make decisions about clothing and colors for your shoot.
With a clear goal in mind, the photographer can now work with you to make recommendations about clothing, colors and props that will work toward that goal. Share with her the things you may be concerned about, the things that you have encountered in the past when working with a photographer, images that you have found that you love and that you don’t prefer. All of these are helpful in honing in on your style and your expectations during the shoot.
Step 3: Gather all clothing for the shoot and make all appointments a couple of weeks ahead of time (hair/make-up/nail) so that you can relax on your shoot day.
Now, with a clear goal for the shoot and choices made on clothing and colors, we just have to focus on having a fun and relaxed state of mind during the shoot.
In order to get into this state of mind, you must feel organized and confident that you have made all the necessary plans and appointments so that your shoot day goes off without a hitch.
After you have gathered all of the clothing you plan to wear during the photo shoot, try it on, make sure you have everything you plan to wear with each outfit from head to toe, including jewelry, accessories and shoes and make sure all has a flattering fit and is wrinkle free.
If you plan to have your hair, make-up and nails professionally done, make those appointments as far ahead of time as possible to ensure that you have your choice of appointment times that are convenient for you.
The night before your shoot, double check that all plans are in place, get a good night’s sleep and wake up ready to enjoy your experience, feeling at your best and refreshed.
These 3 steps truly are the keys to success. If you follow them, taking your photographer’s lead, your chances of success are maximized and within your reach.
